Today we are going to talk about Intrepid Museum of the Sea, Air and Space (in English Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum), a spectacular aeronautical museum that is located on the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, which is anchored at Pier 86, at the height of 12th Ave and 42nd Street, in the vicinity of Times Square.

Brief history of the museum

The USS Intrepid aircraft carrier served the US Navy in World War II and the Vietnam War, and was a support ship in NASA's Gemini and Mercury missions

In the year 1982 was purchased by a non-profit organization to found the museum at its current location, at Manhattan's Pier 86.

Inside we can see completely restored some of the best fighter aircraft in historyAs an F16, an MIG-21 or an Lockheed A-12, the famous Blackbird spy plane or several combat helicopters.

In addition, we can enjoy the three great jewels of the crown of this museum:

  • A plane Concord, the fastest commercial aircraft in history. Just below it we find tables and chairs where we can sit down for a coffee or a snack and also enjoy beautiful views of the Hudson.
  • The submarine Growler, which is the only diesel submarine with strategic missiles that is allowed to visit in the United States.
  • The space shuttle Enterprise, which is visited in a closed pavilion that they have installed in the back of the aircraft carrier. In its pavilion we will also find an exhibition with the history of space shuttles and we will find a Soyuz spacecraft, which served to go and return to the International Space Station.
